I use the stamps. You save the pic, open it in your graphics program of choice, and select the area you want for a brush. In serif there's an option to then make it a brush.
I never got downloading brushes either ^_^;
The swirly one, Lapointe's Road, is a favourite of mine... resisting urge to overuse...
